Greening the Land, Strengthening Communities

Yayasan Meramu Alam Nusantara has officially launched the Bumi Hijau Nusantara Program, a strategic community-based initiative aimed at restoring degraded land while enhancing community economic resilience through adaptive and sustainable agroforestry systems. This program is a concrete response to the increasingly complex environmental and socio-economic crises, particularly in areas under high ecological pressure such as community forests, degraded lands, and conservation buffer zones.

By integrating forestry species with economically valuable agricultural commodities such as spices, coffee, local fruits, and non-timber forest products, Bumi Hijau Nusantara offers a landscape approach that not only restores ecological functions but also generates new economic value for local communities. Each stage of the program is designed through a participatory process, involving farmer groups, women, rural youth, and village governments in planning, planting, management, and monitoring.

“This program is not only about planting trees, but also about cultivating self-reliance, food sovereignty, and hope for rural communities,” said the Executive Director of Yayasan Meramu Alam Nusantara.

In addition to increasing green cover and environmental quality, the program contributes to carbon emission reduction targets through an agroforestry carbon scheme. Meramu is currently preparing a voluntary carbon business model that enables communities to receive direct benefits from the environmental services they manage.

In the long term, Bumi Hijau Nusantara is expected to serve as a best-practice example in implementing Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and land-based climate solutions, delivering tangible impacts on climate, social, and economic aspects. The program also aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 13 (Climate Action), Goal 15 (Life on Land), and Goal 1 (No Poverty).
